Refugium reverse photo period, could it actually fuel daytime algae?
I was just reading some articles about PH and whatnot (Randy Holmes Farley stuff) and started to think about CO2. If algae gives off Co2 at night time when it isn't photosynthesizing, then the chaeto ball in my fuge is doing just that during the day when the fuge light is off and the display light is on .. thus, helping to fuel algae in my display tank! Am I wrong? Or is it too in.

Im a big fan of canister type power filters for several reasons; they require the least care, have the longest cycling/maintenance intervals, dont rely on gravity, adapt and can quickly to increased bioload/overfeeding. The best units use very little electricity and have long lasting, reusable media.

Wet-dry, reef or trickle filters employ a separate open filter utility/sump, a draining and pumping water-return mechanism along with various remoted filtration components. They typic

Canister Filters: Although canister filters are designed primarily for mechanical and chemical filtration, many people are using them these days as biological filters. They will hold enough media to support a good population of beneficial bacteria. However, they have the same disadvantage as an undergravel filter for marine aquarium use, in that the bacteria are fully-submerged, and so are competing for oxygen with fish in the aquarium. Many models come with a spray bar return, which if placed horizontally ju

Now, lets take a look at a typical marine tank set-up; A small water volume, with lots of non-filter feeders, happily over-fed. Small wonder the battle to limit their waste build-up.

The next subsections delve into filtration methods as principally biological, physical/mechanical, and chemical. All three kinds of filtration occur in all types of filters; and all potential filters you evaluate for purchase/use should be weighed for their efficiencies/manipulation for all three.
