On the plus side they are small, powerful, and inexpensive. On the negative side, my experience has shown these pumps to be unreliable and potentially dangerous. I have had a number simply fail to operate after just a year or two of service. Worse yet, I have also received mild shocks from a couple of these pumps. The potential for electrocution was the final straw. I systemically went through my customers tanks and replaced all the Rio pumps with comparable ones from other manufacturers. It is especially unfair to these fish, who eventually join the ranks of millions that have died needlessly, their bodies decomposing in our dumps and landfills, when just a few short weeks or months before, they had been thriving in the ocean. Filtration, en toto, embodies all you can do to mimic or even best "natural conditions": low organics, high oxygen tension, ready concentrations of necessary minerals and foods; non-linear, chaotic and robust water movement. If you take a quick look at this species they dont seem like aquarium fishes. They are large and highly predatory. But then again, these are qualities that attract some, like me! If youve been keeping aquariums for a while and have the room to keep large predatory fishes I recommend you try
