All this being stated, there are many folks who have been and are successful with tiny, mini-mini marine systems and nano-reefs, tanks of a few gallons to pickle jars. I say, "More power to them". Theyre the lucky and/or learned ones who know and do "what it takes" (very little really) to make a system work: proper set-up, patience, and balance.<

We admit that this list includes species that are sometimes kept successfully, under the right conditions. Our list is based on many criteria, and weve tried to qualify those species that may be considered borderline, adding comments to that effect when necessary. Our point in compiling this list, is that there are hundreds of species that will do well in aquaria, and have been proven to survive even longer, in some cases, than they would in the wild. We feel there is no reason to sell species that have a history of being difficult.

They are designed to run 24/7. This constant on and off can damage or destroy some powerheads. I would only use Aquarium Systems or Hagen powerheads for this type of usage. Even such, occasionally these powerheads will make a brief chattering noise when first turned on. This can be annoying to some individuals, so be aware. Check out this link for more:

Overflow Boxes vs. Drilled Fittings:

I tend to be more charitable re these devices than several of my cohorts. Overflow boxes are for folks who have not or dont want to have their tanks drilled, but instead come to rely on hang-on arrangements that in turn are subject to tragic failure... counting on sufficient water level/s, a lack of blockage by livestock... Mud sump
Hi, my husband is starting a new 170 gal tank with a 100 gal mud sump for me. Is it ok to take maybe a third of the mud from my 50 gal mud sump and use it like a sourdough starter? How long would it take for it to cycle? Thanks.
