The creation of this list was not based on any type of scientific method, but rather on our own experience with the many aquariums weve installed. Each species on this list has consistently proven able to tolerate high levels of ammonia and nitrite, for at least four weeks, in the many freshwater aquariums installed by The Aquarium Professionals Group.

Note to Experienced Hobbyists: This is a list that was written mostly for beginners. In some cases, we felt that it was best to use the common family names that aquarium and pet stores use for fish, rather than actual scientific classifications, so

Reef, cold, temperate or tropical, etc.; and consideration of food use of the organisms (herbivorous, planktivorous, piscivorous) metabolisms (slow to fast), as well as density (light to too much). Tanks with half as much life in them are easily four times easier to take care of.

Irregardless of the type of set-up, filtration, or livestock you have the following applies in terms of system shape, circulation and aeration.

System Shape:

Flatter, shallower, more square systems are easi

If you have an unusually-shaped fish tank, such as a hexagonal, or extra high aquarium, try keeping one inch of fish for every 12 square inches (length times width) of aquarium surface area. Remember to allow for growth.

New-Tank Cycle (Ecological Break-in) Information:

Start with 25% of the total capacity of the aquarium in inches. Wait at least two weeks before adding more fish. Waiting three weeks is better. Do a 25% water change before you add new fish, not immediately after. If youre setting up a new aquarium, installing a plenum will be relatively easy. If you have an existing reef tank, installing a plenum will involve a fair to major amount of work. Definitely read up on the subject before you go to work.

Do get and use ammonia, nitrite and nitrate test kits for saltwater and document the likely (you might not detect this) rise in ammonia concentration with time, then its drop to zero, an increase in nitrites, and their drop and the inevitable (and welcome) presence and increase in nitrates.

When the ammonia and nitrites have gone to zero parts per million (ppm) and there is appreciable nitrates (a few ppm), and likely the beginning of algal growth, you are ready to start stocking your new system probably with a few "cleaner uppers" to start.
