$1 Per Gallon Aquarium

There is a finite and practical stocking density to any aquarium. Rules of thumb such as X inches/cm of fish per gallon are really inappropriate without perspective. Beyond the obvious differences and potentials to various filtration methodologies when placed on the same sized aquarium, there is the very real matter of mass versus length. Always remember to start an aquarium with no more than 25% of the total carrying-capacity of the tank. See our Guidelines for Stocking an Aquarium for more information.

To insure that you always have healthy fish, you should keep the tank clean and religiously perform partial water changes. This will not only keep your fish happy but will make for a better looking tank as well!

The upside is less and easier maintenance, better water quality, lower mortality & morbidity, increased carrying capacity with larger margins for error. In other words, more fun, time and money!

.. But oh no, I listened to "Stank" and yes, the system did leak, and yes, we drained the tank, removed the gravel by buckets, and the filter plates to get to the split gasket on that through-hull. Did I mention the thousand gallons of synthetic seawater we threw away?
