Boy (& Girl) there are lots of filter products; and laudatory claims to go along with them. Happily, folks in the West have been keeping marine aquaria since the 1950s with little more than undergravel filter knowledge and practice. Heres another area where you dont have to be an engineer to be successful; dont let the material here or advertisements elsewhere overwhelm you.

Glass (fused bead) types are superior in that they produce bubbles of uniform size (optimum is about 1 mm in diameter), do not clog easily, may be readily cleaned and re-used and dont break. Ceramic/sand, plastic wand varieties are worse for the opposite reasons.

Regarding "wood" mechanical diffusers; these are suitable for air-driven protein skimmers only; the fine bubbles they produce for a while are dangerous to livestock, known to cause embolism and other environmental gas- diseases. My strong recommendation is to utilize a separate dedicat

The Jaubert Plenum System, if constructed properly, can work well, provided the aquarium is only lightly-stocked with fish. While we are sure some hobbyists would disagree with us here, we feel that more research is necessary on this fascinating subject. As promoters of ideas to general audiences, there are reasons for forwarding generalizations about how big is big enough and hence I have oft-stated (and stand by) my suggestion that forty gallons is a good minimum for a beginner marine system. This is large enough to provide living space, allow for landscaping and grants enough leeway should the "power go out", something die, overfeeding occur
