We change the bulbs, and the animals and algae spring back to life! That simply doesnt happen as often in the reef aquariums we maintain which use metal halide and/or Power Compact lamps. Therefore, for reef aquariums that employ VHO lamps, we recommend changing these bulbs two to three times a year in order to maintain the overall health of the environment.

The other problem we have encountered with VHO lighting is that for some

Your betta should go for the food right away, but if not, watch where the food sinks, and what the betta does. If more than 15 min he has not eaten the food yet, remove the food. Never let the water go cloudy. If it is already, then change it, as cloudy water will threaten your bettas health. N

If you do not remove it, it will punctually rot and cause havoc in the tank.

Bettas prefer to eat from the upper parts of the water column. They dont really enjoy eating from the bottom of the tank. So before dropping the food in the tank, make sure you have his attention. Let him see the food, get it close to his face from the outside of the aquarium, let him check out what it is, and then there you go! Drop food in front of his nose. The best way is to drop a tiny bit of food--about 6 frozen brine shrimp, watch the bettas eat it all and then look a

The plenum method was discovered by Dr. Jean Jaubert and is often referred to as the Jaubert System. "Plenum" refers to an un-oxygenated layer of water trapped beneath a deep layer of gravel or sand at the bottom of an aquarium. This layer of water becomes anaerobic. Bacteria cultivate in this oxygen-free environment and remove nitrates from the aquarium. There are several variations of the plenum, depending on what literature you read.

The basic structure of the plenum system is essentially a deep (3" to 4") layer of gravel, suspended 1/2" to 1" above the bottom of an aquarium. It is usually recommended that very little

Overflow Boxes vs. Drilled Fittings:

I tend to be more charitable re these devices than several of my cohorts. Overflow boxes are for folks who have not or dont want to have their tanks drilled, but instead come to rely on hang-on arrangements that in turn are subject to tragic failure... counting on sufficient water level/s, a lack of blockage by livestock... IF you want to use overflow boxes instead of drilling your tank/s, DO use at least two (yes, I know theyre expensive... so is your gear, livestock, flooding, divorce) on ANY size sy

Fish Out of Water
Although Boni Comandante Jr.’s technique is intended to ship fish used for food, the idea of putting fish to 'sleep' and then transporting them without water is an interesting one.....

250W HQI (Double Ended) MH Retrofit Reflectors
I just got these in! I've been waiting to see them. They are very nice well built reflectors. Not flimsy at all. Vented, and they include a nice heavy glass shield. They are available in a 150w version also if there is interest? I dont have too many right now-I wanted to get a look at them....

Lake Malawi Cichlids Discovery and History
THE DISCOVERY OF LAKE MALAWI The Continent of Africa has always been hailed by Archaeologists and Anthropologists alike, as the birthplace of humanity. It was its’ vast natural resources, and wide varieties of fauna and flora that lured European explorers to its shores beginning in the early 17th Century.
