Some water chemistry parameters you want to keep in mind and maintain your system at:

1) Ammonia (un-ionized ammonia) (NH3), less than 0.01 ppm

2) Ammonium (ionized ammonia) (NH4+), less than 0.25 ppm

(the relative concentration of both types of ammonia can be determined from separate test kits, or a table showing the relationship between pH, temperature, and total ammonia as ammonium)

3) Nitrite ions (NO2-), less than 0.1 ppm as nitrite ion.

4) Nitrate ions (NO3-), less

Run the pumps for another 15 minutes in this mixture. Disassemble and scrub and rinse all the individual parts before placing the pumps back in the tank. After all of this, your powerheads should look and run just like brand new.

About Testing for Biological Filtration:

You will need test kits for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate to measure the concentration of these materials as your system establishes its cycling. There is a large range in accuracy and precision of such kits. Good inexpensive ones are available from such companies as Salifert and Aquarium Systems. For folks who desire deluxe models, look to Hach or LaMotte brands. Further, you would be wise to develop a permanent notebook
