The tropical gar also is possible to keep in aquariums as it doesnt grow as large; however this species is very hard to find. The Cuban gar is a red-list endangered species and shouldnt be kept even if you somehow find one.

In aquariums gars are quite demanding and require a lot of space and clean water. I recommend you to use as big a tank as you can for your gar, and I wouldnt recommend keeping gars in an aquarium smaller than 200 Gallon/720 L. And that should be considered a minimum; a 400 gallon/1400 L tank is preferable.

Even though Hagen uses a high quality stainless steel, I have found they can still rust a tiny amount after years of use. I was just reading some articles about PH and whatnot (Randy Holmes Farley stuff) and started to think about CO2. If algae gives off Co2 at night time when it isn't photosynthesizing, then the chaeto ball in my fuge is doing just that during the day when the fuge light is off and the display light is on .. thus, helping to fuel algae in my display tank!
