Breeding Aquarium Fish

The scientific method for determining the exact number of fish involves using calculations that take the oxygen carrying-capacity factor into consideration, providing a total "biomass" or weight of all the fish that can safely be kept in one tank. This weight measurement is called the "carrying capacity."

In some public aquariums, fish farms, and aquaculture facilities, a sampling of fish are actually weighed before they are introduced to a system to prevent over-crowded conditions. It is impossible to do this for the average home aquarium.

A good stop-gap measure, but not a long-term solution. You want to find the root cause/s of the problem and solve them.

Adding More Beneficial Microbes: Can be done by placing more cured live rock, and/or clean "old" substrate or filter media, or cycling products.

Adding Bio-Absorbers: Macro-Algae are probably the best known forms of photosynthetic life that can be added safely to help "take up" ammonia, nitrite. Caulerpa and Halimeda spp. in particular are good for this purpose.

Chemical Filtrants: Exist for removing amm

It is no more realistic, however, to expect a fish to just grow to its tanks size than it is to expect a colt to never grow into a horse because it lives in a small barn. Good planning is logical and necessary but not insurmountable for realizing your dream aquarium. There is nothing wrong with airstone-only driven systems. These move a goodly volume of water, with the added benefit of increased gaseous diffusion; while not adding extra waste heat. Air pumps are the "lowest-cost" provider of water movement.
