Due diligence, what does it mean to you? Here it means investigating enough to make intelligent choices/decisions on what is best for your system... How many through-puts (bulkheads, gas-jet fittings, thru-hulls...) of what diameter will you want/need? Where should they go? Maybe an overflow standpipe arrangement is better for your application? While I agree that reverse flow may help keep the gravel somewhat cleaner, I cant really be bothered with this option. It does not completely eliminate the need to vacuum the gravel while doing a water change. Inevitably, some debris will settle in the gravel and will need to be removed. Also, the powerhead and its sponge prefilter are also kind of big and ugly, making this kind of setup even more obtrusive than a standard installation. Lastly, in large aquariums, heavily decorated aquarium or other situations where thoroughly vacuuming all the substrate would be impractical, I normally dont use an undergravel and i

Boy (& Girl) there are lots of filter products; and laudatory claims to go along with them. Happily, folks in the West have been keeping marine aquaria since the 1950s with little more than undergravel filter knowledge and practice. Heres another area where you dont have to be an engineer to be successful; dont let the material here or advertisements elsewhere overwhelm you.

To assure this last point is clear. Having low (less than ten ppm) nitrate is desirable, but not essential with fish only, live rock and algae systems.

Your goal in preparing an environment suitable to support your animal livestock is to first get populations of these two bacteria groups going in your new aquarium.

.. but best to wait a good two weeks after using these products, measure some accumulating nitrate, possibly algal growth as indications that the system has "really" cycled enough.
