1) Commit! Decide you are going to spend the $$ it takes to make a proper go of it. At a minimum, most tanks, (from 10 gal to 55 gal) take between $250 and $500 to get going. Can you do it cheaper? Yes, but usually not your first one. You have to know what you are doing and understand how things can and will go wrong before you can choose less expensive husbandry options and/or equipment. Save up if you have to, but count on that first tank being expensive.

Realize that this is not a short term commit

Maybe youre really familiar with a CAD-CAM computer program, but most folks do fine with quadrille paper (for estimating size) a pencil, straight-edge and a BIG eraser. Draw out the basics of your main/display tank, any sumps, reservoirs, refugiums you intend, how they will likely be juxtaposed (measuring and drawing their dimensions as well as stands/supports), AND THEN consider how and where they might best be joined by plumbing.

The deep gravel bed also provides a home for burrowing motile invertebrates which feed on solid organic mulm and detritus. These burrowing animals, which are either purchased and/or cultivate on their own from live rock, serve to keep the plenum porous and aid in the slow movement of water through the system. "Burrowing" sea cucumbers that serve this function well may be purchased from a good aquarium store.

The aquarium is stocked with live rock, but not as much as is typically used. The live rock construct should be suspended above the gravel bed, allowing water to move freely

Know how to check for the hazard of back-pressure build-up and subsequent inefficiency and failure of your air pump; by disconnecting the air line tubing from the pump and trying to blow through it. If you cant do this easily, neither can you r pump. Periodically (about every month) check and clean, or replace clogged diffusers.

Air Valves: These come in plastic and metal. Do not use metal in or around your tank. They are used to direct the desired amount

Habitat: Require a specialized habitat which is very difficult to simulate.

Drugs: Often collected using Sodium Cyanide or drugs, or which come from areas of the world where these methods are still in use.

Aggressive: Extremely aggressive, have large territories in the wild, and are unsuitable for most community aquariums. Aggression in fish is not an indicator of "anger" but is due to highly-territorial behavior.

hello again- Well my 90 gallon predator/reef tank has been up in running for about 7 months. Everything is running smoothly so far- water parameters are nitrate > 20 ppm, nitrite 0ppm, ammonia 0 ppm, pH 8.2, salinity 1.025, but phosphates are way to high it's about 5 ppm. For the past two weeks....
